Picture this: Blade is locked in a sword fight with Deadpool, Hawkeye and Yondu are engaged in a battle of arrows and Black Widow is preying on Cloak & Dagger. This is Marvel Super War, where humans, mutants and aliens duel in the jungles of Wakanda.
The game lets you choose your favourite superhero or supervillain, all of whom have traits and abilities that cleverly reference their backstories. For instance, Groot will become Baby Groot once he’s defeated and will hang around the battlefield until he’s revived. Loki can disguise himself as other characters and create illusions, while Thanos may obtain Infinity Stones to enhance his abilities.
Each hero (or villain) has multiple skins, so you can become gladiator Hulk from Thor: Ragnarok or dress up Magneto in his Marvel NOW! outfits. There are also exclusive original designs, such as the videogame-themed Arcade skins for Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While the gameplay follows most conventions of the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre, there are Marvel-themed twists waiting: the most powerful neutral monster in the jungle is the fire demon Surtur, the destroyer of Asgard. Defeat him and you’ll earn the Crown of Surtur, which resurrects the demon to fight on your side.
Then there’s the bold Power Core system: it’s smartly modelled after the colours of the six Infinity Stones and opens up access to all the modular perks right from the start. There are regular updates and events, too. Some events feature unusual game modes like Battle for Vibranium, where you must collect vibranium from mining veins or steal it from enemies to amass enough for victory. Whether you’re a comics connoisseur or a competitive gaming fan, Marvel Super War’s infinite battles are endlessly entertaining.
