The hayseed robots are armed with pitchforks and corn cannons. The giant one-eyed scorpions have legs the size of telephone poles. And you? You’ve got a sword, a blaster and a lot of determination. If you’re lucky, that might be enough.
Spirit Roots traces its family tree back to the classic 2D side-scrolling platformers of yesteryear. Travel through the five domains of the Stitched-Together Planet, a world in which the only constant is that just about everything wants to squash you. Swamp plants spit lethal blobs of venom, while roly-poly yetis try to grind you into the tundra. You’ll need sharp reflexes and every ounce of cunning you can muster.
The winsome visuals are spectacular – a cool animated film come to life. As you battle everything from bomb-hurling bugs to creepy teleporting wizards, the action stays fast, fluid and vibrant.
Precise touch controls help you leap over spiky deathtraps and eliminate ferocious enemies in dozens of sprawling, handcrafted stages. But don’t get cocky: if you get hit, back to the last checkpoint you go.
And really, every setback is just another excuse to marvel at the game’s stunning looks and beautifully balanced design. Whether you’re a platforming pro or relative newbie, there’s a lot to dig here.
