In Dream League Soccer 2021, the world’s greatest championships have been replaced with one global league to rule them all: The Dream League. And you’ve been put in charge of a new club, to be built in your image.
Like the 1974 Netherlands team, this game is all about total football. You don’t just play the games, you manage transfers, tactics and finances – the whole shebang.
You’re eased into it all gently, though. First you’ll learn the in-game controls, a virtual joystick on the left and three buttons on the right for passing, shooting, pressing, tackling and more. Directional swipes on the right side of the screen trigger different tricks when you have the ball, from stepovers to elaborate overhead flicks.
And it all looks terrific. This season’s game is built on new tech, with around 300 new motion captured animations and a host of new graphical flourishes.
And then when the final whistle blows, it’s time to tinker with tactics, upgrade your facilities and delve into the transfer market. And again, it’s all explained clearly and concisely for new players, with new things to think about introduced over the course of your first handful of matches.
Once you’re feeling vaguely competent, there are online matches to tackle and regular in-game events to take part in. These all help to build up your finances so you can further improve your squad and your club’s facilities until you’re a Dream League-conquering behemoth.
