Bookends is the reference management app you've been looking for.
The basic version offers:
• Search online sites directly (arXiv, Google Books, Google Scholar, JSTOR, the Library of Congress, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Semantic Scholar) or use the built-in browser (EZProxy-compliant) to download PDFs and reference metadata (requires access privileges). Searches can return a maximum of 20 references, and only 50 references can be stored in your personal database.
• Use unique identifiers such as DOI, PMID, ISBN, or arXiv id to autofill references.
• See PDF annotation in a note stream, and create your own with our powerful PDF markup engine.
• Barcode scanning, one per day.
• And many more features designed to help you discover, organize, and use reference information.
Standard, one-time purchase ($14.99):
• No limit on searches or importing.
Pro Features Yearly Subscription ($14.99). Requires a Standard purchase.
• Cloud sync with all your iOS devices and Bookends for Mac (separate purchase)

Subscription is for one year and has an auto-renew option. The subscription can be managed in iOS -> Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. A subscription may renew if it isn't canceled at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
If the subscription is not renewed, Pro Features will be disabled but Standard features will continue to work.
No cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during the active subscription period.

• Selecting an export reference style is now menu-based, so you no longer need to change it in Settings first.
• Bookends uses a built-in format for exporting to BibTeX. If you need your own version, please obtain and install a BibTeX CSL style.
• Fixed a problem where book cover art was not attached to a reference imported via Quick Add.
• Fixed a crash that could occur the first time a local library was synced with an existing cloud library.
• Fixed a bug when using a CSL style where only the first initial was output when the authors name contained two or more initials in a row.

The best solution for Apple’s ecosystem
Bookends has its wrinkles, especially for conference papers if you work in or with engineering, and I still sorely miss the always-reliable formatting from the days when I could manage all of my references in BibTeX. But a smooth piece of software that syncs across all devices is priceless. I’m learning to work within its wrinkles, with an EZProxy connection, I can pull in articles from anywhere, and it’s instantly become my preferred PDF reader for anything serious. Go ahead and take the plunge: yes, it’s a small company, but the product is really nice.

I bought it for mac and iOS to read and cite my papers in both platforms. But most attachments are not synced in iPad from my Mac. Really disappointing...
Update: after reading carefully the instructions on the website, syncing was successfully set up. But the whole process is complex and it took me a while to understand it and set it up. It will be nice to be more simple and straight forward.

Update: Cloud Sync of attachments requires all attachments on Mac to be placed to the special folder in iCloud Drive which should be created by macOS. But this initial setup should be done just once and everything else should just work after the first sync.

Only 50 references are allowed. It is impossible to make the in app purchase. Another example of a company that makers useless software.

We don’t process transactions, everything is done by Apple, so you should contact them directly if you're having a problem. You might also google “Why can’t I get in-app purchases?”. There are some suggestions from users having the same problem with other apps. For examples, check to make sure that in-app purchases isn't turned off on your iOS device. Or try to sign out of your iTunes account and then try to purchase.
