FreeStyle Libre 3 - NL 4+

De app werkt goed, maar waarom geen ondersteuning voor de apple watch? De apple watch heeft zowel bluetooth als nfc en kan prima funtioneren als freestyle libre reader. Dit zou een groot voordeel zijn voor diabetici!

I have recently moved from the Medrtonic Guardian 4 to the FreeStyle Libre 3. I made this change because I wanted to use the Ypso pump in it’s closed loop system. I chose the Libre 3 over the Dexcom G6 due to it’s very small size. In the past I have also used the the Dexcom G4 and the Dexcom G5.

Overall the Libre 3 shows decently accurate values, and the small size of the sensor is very nice. However, I find the app to be missing lot of features, especially when compared to the Dexcom or Medtronic apps. So I have written some suggestions to the developers below.

While in the ‘Home’ screen, it is impossible to actually check past values. Sure, I can see a graph, but if I wanted to know my exact blood sugar 10 minutes ago, that is impossible. This is actually impossible anywhere in the app. On the Dexcom and Medtronic apps this is very easy to do: just tap on the graph and it will show the value that was selected. Weirdly, the LibreLinkUp app has this feature implemented. So its benefits are clearly known. It should not be too dificult to implement the same functionlity in the Liber 3 app. Like, at the moment, if I want to know my blood sugar from 10 minutes ago, I have to ask my boyfriend to check his phone and tell me, because I can not see it on the main app.
While in the ‘Home’ screen, it is impossible to adjust the graph. The graph is set to show the past 12 hours. But in my opinion, this window is too large, and I would prefer to see the last 3 hours or 6 hours. The 12 hours window is just too crowded in my opinion. So there should be an option to change the number of past hours that are shown on the graph. Aditionally, there should also be the option to scroll back thoruh the graph on the ‘Home’ screen. I know I can see past days in the reports section, but it would still be very nice to have an interactie graph in the main screen of the app. Again, this is a basic functionality that is present in both the Dexcom and the Medtronic apps.
There is no way to view my blood sugar level without opening the app. This involves picking up the phone, unlocking it, finding the app and opening it. It would be much more convenient if a widget was available. with a widget set up, all I would have to do is swipe right on my locked Iphone and I could see my blood sugar. Even better, if the developers implemented a lock screen widget, all I would have to do is tap my phone to wake it. This would increase blood sugar awareness by a lot. Again, this functionality is available in both the Dexcom and Medtronic apps.
Lastly, I wish there were more alarm sound options. Currently the only options are the IPhone default notification sound and a ‘Custom’ sound that plays a tune which sounds like an ancient alarm clock. Clearly, the Custom sound is meant for parents of young children so that they do not miss an alert. For users which do not what their phone to sound like a bomb about to explode, the only option is the standard notification sound. Unfortunately, this is not enough options, as I still want to know when I receive a notification from Libre 3. With the standard notification sound, I can not know if my blood sugar is low or if I just received a text on instagram. There should be at least a third sound option, one that is unique from other notificaiton sounds, but which does not make everyone in the room panic…. Again, Dexcom and Medtronic have had these options for years.

I do not want to sound insulting to the developers that have clearly worked very hard on this product. The reports feature, for example, is better than those offered by Dexcom or Medtronic. I just want to highlight some shortcomings of the app that I found surprising. I can not image that any of the features that I have mentioned above could not be implemented, so I struggle to understand why Abbott has not included them. The app feels unfinished without them, and it leaves me wondering if I should switch to the Dexcom G6 instead. This would be a pity considering the impressively small size of the Libre 3. If the Libre 3 app was made to be a competitive product to the Dexcom, I do not understand why such basic features were left out. The quality of the Libre 3 app is, in my opinion, the biggest drawback of this sensor. But, the way I see it, this drawback could be easily fixed. So I remain hopeful and wait for a big update to the app :)

De sensor werkt niet op je Iphone als je je besturingssysteem regelmatig up to date houdt. Ik heb automatische updates uitstaan maar alsnog duurt het een half jaar voordat ze deze bijwerken. En ivm veiligheid en andere apps moet je toch af en toe updaten. Helaas werkt de sensor dan niet.
