Het Institute Geographique National geeft 1500 topografische kaarten (schaal 1:25000) uit (plus honderden met een grotere schaal). Die kaarten zijn onmisbaar als je wilt wandelen of fietsen in Frankrijk. Eén zo'n kaart kost een euro of zeven. Ze zijn prima, maar bezwaar is dat je er zo vanaf fietst of wandelt omdat ze een klein gebied bestrijken. Autotochtjes brengen je binnen vijf minuten van de kaart...Voor 5 euro heb je de pro app (wel nodig voor cache management) en voor 14 euro een jaar lang alle kaarten die het IGN maakt. Je moet ze wel apart downloaden (ze staan niet allemaal op je iPhone/iPad, dat zou krankzinnig veel GB's kosten) en dat kan makkelijk op basis van je GPS locatie (het geweldige van de combinatie van deze app met je GPS is dat je al wandelend ook precies ziet waar je bent). Heeft als nadeel dat je in je huisje/camping te Frankrijk wel WIFI moet hebben, anders wordt het via 3G roaming wel erg duur waarschijnlijk. Wifi ter plekke is dus wel een voorwaarde, maar dat is vaak haalbaar. Of van tevoren downloaden, maar dan moet je wel je hele reisschema al vooraf kennen.Bottom line: heel Frankrijk op zak in hoogste detail dat verkrijgbaar is (zelfs het kadaster zit er in, waarop je ieder schuurtje kunt zien) voor 19 euro. (het abonnement op de kaarten is jaarlijks dus 14 euro, of 5 euro per maand, wat weer handig is voor een vakantiemaand.)Via het web is al het kaartmateriaal trouwens gratis te bekijken: www.geoportal.fr

It's a great app. You can download the maps straight from IGN. With downloading you can select multiple coverage areas, from 1/800k to 1/12,5k. So excellent for hiking. I will use this app on my next holiday in France and see how it handles there, but I'm optimistic about its possibilities!You can also download satelitephoto's, which you can see using a slider to make the map transparent. Cadastral maps are also downloadable, but I haven't found out how to use them yet. That brings me to the biggest issue. The app is in French and English, but support is only in French.

Pas als je je over de dure aanschaf van 15 euro hebt neergezet, blijkt dat je voor de cache, toch eigenlijk een vanzelfsprekende feature, nog eens 11 euro moet betalen. Let wel, voor slechts één jaar! Dit tart echt elk gevoel voor redelijkheid. Daarbij nog eens de uit de begintijd van apps daterende onhandige en chaotische bediening... Echt onbegrijpelijk dat de ontwikkelaar dit zomaar mag van Apple.Jammer dat ik toch één ster moest geven, want zelfs die verdient de maker niet.
