Sena Motorcycles 4+

This app is an improvement over the original 30K utility app, it also looks a little nicer. But there is still no way of adding speed dial numbers from your contacts, so it doesn't make configuring your Sena device any easier.

The UI is this Sena app looks a lot better and more modern than the previous app, but that’s really all the positive things I can say. At least the “old” was able to hold a stable connection to the helmet. This app seems to constantly lose it’s connection with the headset (SRL2) and keeps reconnecting and showing greyed out screens with a spinning loading wheel. Not very user friendly and honestly shameful quality for a big company like Sena.

So I did a review about the Sena 50 Utility app, which is not that positive. Now a compact review about this Motorcycles app. With my first Sena (50R) I assumed that the headsets came with the “complete package”. Though I need to mention that the hardware itself is great and are solid (and Siri works well!), the app is (or apps are…) far from that.

All the kinds of different apps for specific devices, which are also very outdated too (design, feature and release notes wise), surprised me in a negative way. What to use for what? And why not one uniform and complete app for all devices, which is easier to maintain aswell? It gives me the feeling that Sena is not taking apps seriously at all.

As for this specific SenaMotorcycles app: it lacks features which are present in the 50 Utility app and vice versa… This app followes Apple’s guidelines more when compared to the other 50 Utility app, but still lacks any form of the complete package to setup and manage your Sena device. Not to mention the firmware upgrade process which cannot be realized via the app. Other “features” I will not review for this app because of the overall bad experience.

For group related communication: Bluetooth Group pairing is also a true hell with other devices. As for my other review it still applies to this app: I’m trying to figure out which app to use/works better (or less worse); this one or the 50 Utility app.

Overall a very negative review because I think it lacks any form of quality when compared to the hardware itself. I’m happy to read in the latest release notes of the Sena 50 Utility app that Sena is (finally and hopefully) fully moving to this (Motorcycles) app. Untill that moment I will be sceptical. 2/5 since the overall design it slightly better…
