With Shutter-Speed you can test the shutter speeds of your analog cameras just with your iPhone. Please note that the full potential of this App is only reached if you use it in combination with the PhotoPlug. The PhotoPlug is an optical sensor which connects to the headphone-jack of your iPhone and enables you to measure the actual amount of light passing through the camera shutter. How-To:

Point the camera towards a bright light source. Place the PhotoPlug closely behind the camera shutter. Start the measurement and release the shutter. The App automatically analyzes the signal and calculates the shutter speed. All measurement values can be stored into a handy table. Multiple different cameras/lenses can be stored. A correction factor is calculated, which you can use to compensate a faulty shutter speed. For example, if you measure the 1/60s and it turns out to be 1/50s, the App will tell you that the shutter-speed is 1/3 stops too long. This gives rise to a correction factor of -1, indicating that you have to close your aperture by 1/3 f-stop to get a correct exposure.

Without PhotoPlug, the App will record the sound of the camera shutter and calculate the shutter speed from that. Please note that this procedure will only give useable results for speeds below 1/30sec. With the PhotoPlug, shutter speeds up to 1/500sec can be measured.

Nice app but improvement required!

The app works fine for the lower speeds, i.e. up to about 1/200 sec. It is a very useful tool with an easy user interface. Several camera's can be stored with the results obtained.
However, the app could be (and should be) improved by omitting the choice between "new" and "old" shutter speeds and having the user just dialing in the appropriate shutter speed from a more extended "universal" choice.
For instance, the app will probably mostly be used with old analogue camera's for checking the correctness of speeds. My Leica IIIa (manufactured in 1935) has the following range of shutter speeds: 1 sec, 1/2 sec, 1/4 sec, 1/8 sec, 1/20 sec, 1/30 sec, 1/40 sec, 1/60 sec, 1/100 sec, 1/200 sec, 1/500 sec and 1/1000 sec. A mix of new, old and not available shutter speeds in the app! New and old speeds cannot be mixed in the app and non-existing cannot be typed in.
The recommended PhotoPlug cannot be used with Leica camera's with bottom-loading of the film! The results of my test: all speeds on this 83 year old camera were within 1/3 of a stop!

Pretty decent with the light sensor thing

Works pretty well. I would like the shutter times to not be limited from 1/1 to 1/500. My mamiya goes from 4/1 to 1/1000.

User interface is alright, but be aware you need to zoom in your measurement with pinching to more accurately set the markers from around 1/60 and faster.

If you are searching for a camera app with shutter speed option , then this app is not for you, it’s misleading as it can get,you can only monitor analugue camera’s shutter speed of it wich does require an special equipment for it, wich rely on the microphone or headphone jack input of your iphone, well done boohoo, why not having an option to allow me to change,control and monitor the shutter speed of the iphone’s builtin camera instead or have that as an extra option, that would,ve be handy for me,but no it doesn’t all it relay’s on is the builtin microphone and not the builtin camera ,not at all, well if theres something i would expect from a camera app, it’s everything but a microphone, and that’s PURE. BS
