We are living in an era of social activism never seen before. It’s global, it’s youth-led, and it’s not going away. And news media is not reflecting that. Meanwhile, most of us continue to find mainstream media biased and full of hyped negativity. We are here to change that.
For starters, we don’t just deliver the news – we begin a conversation. Our approach is humble, hence the title: This Much I Know. None of us are omniscient (we wish we were!). We can only try and sift through facts and form opinions through knowledge and experience. The more voices in that conversation, the better. And that’s where you come in.
Every day we deliver our curation of the big issues, stories that cut through the noise, tell you what you need to know, without the fluff. Then canvass your opinion. We constantly poll your views, ask for your advice and feedback. We believe your voice matters. You can talk to us one on one within the app – we love chatting and journalists will answer every message you send is.
We think the news should make you feel good sometimes not bad or depressingly powerless. So, we help you take positive action around the headlines. We send you to petitions and tactical voting sites, and how to donate when a crisis hits around the globe. We run monthly campaigns; be it driving awareness on fashion sustainability, ensuring our lunch habits are less wasteful, helping make your consumer voice count.
Plus, and we think this is a big deal, through the TMIK community (that’s you), we report from the ground, from around the globe. You have told us that hearing from the people living the news means less bias and more trust.
We have ambassadors, which our community have put us in touch with, who report live from the Hong Kong protests and other hotspots around the world; medics describing the unending hardship in Venezuela; women from Argentina telling us the trauma of abortion in a country where it is still illegal. Here in the U.K., street reporting from the Brexit marches in London, broadcasting differing views from Manchester and trying to find Boris fans in his MP’s seat in Uxbridge.
We ask you when you want more information then react accordingly with Deep Dives and Quick Dips on the hot topics – those vital explainers for when you need a little extra info. Our Culture Dips zoom in on the issues that matter. The threat to our environment is the biggest issue we face today. And we report on it constantly. What we can do to ensure the planet’s safety, how to do our bit and how to hold business and politicians to account.
It doesn’t end there! We run big viral campaigns. Our #ThisMuchIKnow wardrobe challenge for #SecondHandSeptember partnered with Oxfam reached millions and raised money.
We hold live debates - our first was how we can still enjoy fashion and feeling glam but do it without harming the planet. Or abusing the women who make our clothes. Lots of you came (we loved meeting you). And TMIK invited the erotic filmmaker Erika Lust over from Barcelona to chat about feminist porn because what we masturbate to, does actually matter.
Our founder and CEO, Emily Sheffield, has 20 years experience in news journalism, and was also the Deputy Editor of British Vogue, before venturing into the tech industry to radically innovate how we share the news. She’s also a columnist for the Evening Standard and a commentator for Sky News, so you might have seen her around! She’s an expert on cutting through the Brexit chaos, and promises to keep sass, warmth and a bit of humour. She’d put cuddles in #ThisMuchIKnow’s Daily Digest if she could, because she doesn’t think we should be constantly bombarded with negativity.
We are backed by Guardian Media Ventures through Founders Factory, a start-up incubator that tries to find solutions with tech to big problems and get innovative businesses off the ground.
We see ourselves as a community not a company and we are looking forward to you joining because we are all about you!
