Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.
It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and keeps videos playing in the background.
Note: The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. Vinegar needs access to the web page to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!
(By the way, check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's basically a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites other than YouTube.)

Definitely a good app
Definitely a good app, but does sometimes have a few issues. Though it saves a lot of annoyance with video playback from YouTube so I would still recommend!
stopped using it and went to wipr
after some time it is a bit dissappointing because functionality like translations in youtube simply aren't accessable anymore. So now I m using Wipr

There's an option in Vinegar's settings to set the translation language for subtitles. You can turn on subtitles with the button at the bottom-right corner of the video player.
(You can access Vinegar's settings by clicking the Vinegar button in Safari's toolbar.)
