Dark Sky

Finally a weather app that is using Dark Sky in Europe. But I do mis iWatch support.

Check out our latest update ;) We finally added Apple Watch support, including an innovative new complication.

Some good things, others could be better

Finally Weather Up can be used in the EU - I was looking forward to this for a long time!

I must say, however that I got a bit disappointed. I really like the ability to see and select bookmarks from the map and I also love the smooth UI. But think it misses the following:

- it always requires me to tap a location to see details. I’d prefer if on app open it would just show details for currently detected location or a selected default location. My primary use case is to know more about my current location

- I think it should have an additional combined hourly + 10 day forecast view to again save taps and more quickly understand the full picture. That view would be slightly more information dense, but I’d be happy to trade that for some legibility loss and secondary details like humidity and sunset/sunrise times (could always scroll down to see those)

- I think a graph is essential to display temperature and precipitation fluctuations. It’s much more easy to consume and compare data like that in a visual manner

- I’d rather have the bookmarks on the map tell me what’s the average weather expectation for the day vs current. So it would be incredibly useful (e.g. for travel planning) if the icon would show rain not because it’s raining now, but because more than N precipitation is expected today.
- this would be even better if it were possible to scrub through a 10 day timeline at the bottom of the map and see the expected average weather for all bookmarked locations. Again, awesome for traveling

- I hope more weather layers become available in the EU. I guess it depends on your data provider(s)

Some UI nitpicking:

- I don’t understand the usefulness of the “minimize” icon at the bottom left of a location’s details page when you could just pull it down to achieve that and what I always try to do when I want to view the map
- pulling down is also used for back navigation from details to location list. Not expected or intuitive. A back button would be more appropriate. I keep making navigation mistakes because of this when I want more room for the map.

Check out the 3.0 update we just launched last week and let us know if we finally earned another star or two ;)

Beautiful app, unfortunately subscription based...

I like this app very much, but I deleted it again: it has a subscription instead of a one time pay options.

While there are free weather apps out there, many of them monetize via ads and selling your location data. If that's your jam, no one’s forcing you to use Weather Up. But just so you understand… weather data is not cheap. We’ve actually been losing money on the 2.x version of the app for over a year now.

Mapping data is the most expensive thing to provide, which is why a lot of weather apps kind of hide it. Every time you launch Weather Up it opens right to a weather map showing radar (or other mapping layers depending on your settings)

Widgets and complications use a lot of data as well. And with Weather Up you can actually put 3 different forecast sources on the same Home Screen. So every time you swipe over we're paying 3X for that data. Every time you lift your wrist and the complication updates, we're paying for that data. And on and on.

Hope that helps explain why we’re charging what we charge (and have to charge via subscription).
