All subscriptions and payments are offered via in-app purchase and will be charged to your iTunes account as soon as we confirm the purchase. All subscriptions auto-renew, unless turned off at least 24 hours before the end of your selected subscription duration. Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, depending on the option you have selected. All subscriptions can be managed through the App Store. Best golf app but latest version has GPS issues
I have tested somewhere between 10-20 different golf apps and most of them have some features that others don’t, but few can match the ease and speed of 18Birdies when you’re on the course.
Things I really like about this app:
* I’ve measured and compared using a Garmin GPS and a laser distance measure. 18Birdies has the most accurate measurements of all apps, by far. Compared to laser it only misses by 1-2 yards. Of course, like with any GPS-app you will not get the accuracy of laser to correctly determine pin position but all other on course yardages are extremely accurate.
However, with the latest updates there have been some problems causing the GPS to sometimes miss your position by 10-30 yards. This is a critical function so it’s imperative that it gets fixed ASAP. I’ve been in contact with support and we’ve identified a possible cause to be if you’re switching between apps. I recently played a round keeping only this app open and didn’t experience any problems so keep that in mind until an update fixes this problem for good.
* High quality map pictures that are better than all competitors. If your course isn’t updated, just send an email and it will be taken care of in one or two workdays.
* The ability to set your club distances and get club recommendations for every shot, even with wind and elevation taken into account. This is a HUGE plus as it makes you able to plan your shots even when you’re not aiming for the green. Let’s say you’re in the woods and don’t have a clear sight towards the green and maybe a hazard that might come into play, well you just use the app to determine a safe distance to land your shot to have your favorite club distance on the next.
* When registering your score and stats on each hole you can choose exactly what to include, it’s really fast to note down stuff like chips, puts, sand and penalty strokes. If you use an Apple Watch this is even faster.
* You can track shots without being forced to track every shot. As far as I know no other app offers this.
* AI Coach - a training aid where you film your swing and get feedback and suggested drills to improve.
* The ability to set my own hcp so that it displays correctly at all times. It’s nice that the app automatically calculates your hcp according to USGA-rules but not all countries use the same system and here in Norway we are forced to use the antiquated GolfBox system to register scores, which causes a lot of hassle. It might seem like a small thing but it’s very advantageous to be able to edit your hcp in the app. Some apps don’t let you do this.
Things I would like to see improved:
* The UI and design feels a bit dated. I also would like to be able to personalize this more and not be forced into the AI Coach every time I open the app. I’d rather be taken straight to the “play now” tab, the social tab or a separate tab for training (where AI could be included). I also don’t like the pop ups asking me for feedback after each round.
* Training drills should be grouped together in one tab and not like it is now with AI Coach in one place and drills buried deep into personal settings. I’d also like to see drills based on what areas of your game I need to improve based on my stats. More drills about putting and close game would be appreciated.
* Improved stat page to better highlight what I need to work on.
Overall the only real competitor to 18Birdies is TheGrint, which is also a great golfing app. TheGrint offers a lot better design and stats, but doesn’t offer the great GPS accuracy and ease of use on the course that 18Birdies does.
That’s why this is my app of choice at the moment.
