Workflowy has given me direction and purpose for my abundance of energy.

I have an abundance of energy, and usually at work its easy to give it an outlet naturally through the projects and assignments that come up. “You don’t have a choice”, so to speak.

But in your free time, when you still have energy left over, if you don’t know how to direct yourself and have that purpose through goals that you CAN achieve quite easily (until you build the drive and sense of mastery to go for bigger and more long term goals), you end up sleeping on the couch and binge watching TV shows and movies all afternoon and evening.

I was in this “rut” for many many months (let alone years), until one day I knew I had to do something different if anything was going to happen, if I was ever to achieve something of the things I really wanted. And that was actually just feeling drive, and purpose.

And so I started making small lists in Workflowy of the things I could do right away, like folding clothes hanging to dry and vacuuming the rooms in my house, and fixing the doorknob that’s been loose for 6 months.

I wrote about 10 tiny things (that I later realised was goals, just as important as any big one just you actually just achieved them) that was important to do for my well being and homely feel in my house.

Once I just got started, through a small bounce of willpower, I blasted through those goals super fast, and in the first evening I had achieved more of my plans than I ever have in my life. That might be completely normal for most people, but as a person who has achieved some cool things without any direct plans, but who’s always wanted to have the ability to actually make plans and achieve them, this was huge for me. And Workflowy helped me do it through it’s simplicity and customisation possibilities. After a few days I felt like organising my list a little bit differently and adding some colours to it, making it easier to make out what was to be done in each area.

But I had to make sure to keep it simple, and rather add tasks to a few main categories that I can just pick and choose from in my free time. Then I just pick the one I feel like doing, as all of these tasks are things that needs to be done and it all helps towards the overall picture, which is a clean, spacious, open environment with all things in their best condition. As I discovered I could actually get things done quite quickly, just feeling myself being in motion and going FORWARD, spending my energy wisely (instead of lying on the couch), I got more and more ideas for things to do and to keep being in this delicious flow. Right away as I had started these small tasks I could feel the satisfaction of crossing them off the list, and the satisfaction of getting things done. Mind you you also need to get enough sleep and eat good to actually have some energy surplus to do things. But the surplus of energy also comes through just getting started on your list, it doesn’t come beforehand. The energy and motivation comes after you have started.

And so I also dared to realise that I might be able to achieve bigger goals in the future, and actually having the patience to break them up into smaller and smaller parts until I get to the task that I can actually do right now. It’s a journey and an adventure, that’s what it feels like. And suddenly a feeling comes, that you are actually able to get to that place you want to be. You just need to keep powering in your flow, being in that state of doing the next thing on your list that takes you further in that direction, and the best part it’s enjoyable and satisfying just doing things. Even if it’s completely normal, everyday stuff, it’s so much better than sleeping on the couch, worrying about all these things.

Thank you Workflowy for creating this amazing list building program.

Some things which could be better at IOS: Sometimes after a while of using Workflowy I am not able to drag and drop tasks to another indent, and I have to restart the app to get it working again.

Best regards.
