GAME OF THE DAY
Speed through the future
Neon Drive puts you in the fast lane.
Neon Drive - '80s style arcade
Music rhythm game
The future is neon in this ’80s-inspired arcade game, where you’ll have to turbocharge your driving technique to manoeuvre a supercar in a race to the finish line. Staying on course, however, is no easy feat as you dodge the onslaught of obstacles thrown into the mix.
Neon Drive is a world of futuristic cityscapes, ocean roads and illuminated street grids, all set to the beat of an atmospheric synthpop soundtrack that dials up the intensity speedometer.
We love how much this game feels like an ode to the heyday of retro arcades and their straightforward gameplay. Remember when you were tasked with racing while steering clear of oncoming vehicles, making circles with aeroplanes, controlling spaceships and launching missiles to avert falling asteroids? Neon Drive relives those experiences while sticking to the formula of simple control mechanisms: all you need to do is move your car left or right.
The game has eight challenging levels and it’s up to you to take the wheel, rev up your reaction times and find the route to a win. As one scene morphs into the next, along with synth sound effects that keep pace with the evolving storyline, you’ll find yourself in a focused, almost mesmerised rhythm.
As you advance to higher levels new surprises await, but throughout, the basic premise of moving your car left and right remains the same. That doesn’t mean things will be boring though. Just like retro games where developers let their imaginations run wild creating worlds of infinite possibilities (despite the more limited technology of the time), Neon Drive embodies everything that made those games such a hit but with an added new-age spin.
The slick animations that appear when a checkpoint is crossed or the effects of exploding asteroids will rock your drive with their force; it’s almost like playing in the realised future that those old games dreamed of.
So, start your engine and get into gear. The drive of your life has a green light.
