Ratings and Reviews
This app was clearly not ready-for-market when originally released. How much real-world testing did you do? I’m loathe to provide details of the issues I encounter, but there are many. I use AT buses over a dozen times per week. I do not have a car, by choice, so rely on public transport. The new bus network on North Shore is brilliant. When it works. The 83 bus doesn’t play well with the app. The bus will approach Browns Bay village, disappear from GPS, then reappear over by Albany (!?), then somehow take nearly 15 minutes to take a 3-minute journey up the hill. Please fix the GPS glitches. These happen almost every day and make journey planning quite difficult at times. I know AT is led by intractably bullying narcissists, but please see what you can do. The app is not particularly fit for purpose, and it would be remiss of you to expect your users to bear the sole response of providing feedback. First task: go to Browns Bay village and discern why buses by default seem to regularly disappear from GPS there. Thanks.
Buggy and annoying new feature
A big thing I noticed is that the duration of bus rides can be very far off which makes me question how useful the app is overall for planning anything. For example the bus route 105 takes 5 minutes one way, but 25 minutes the other way although it takes the exact same stops. I’ve been taking the bus for a while and either way it typically takes about 15 minutes. This means that all arrival times and the ranking of best transport to take is completely wrong. This is the most basic feature I would expect from this app and many people rely on it.
The recently introduced feature to remind you when to hop on or exit the bus is nice in theory, but ends up being very annoying as it pushes a lot of false notifications. I.e. it seems to just take every search I make as a request to track that bus (I often search / view multiple bus routes so I get spammed after), plus it seems to take into account the location, but not if I’m walking or driving. Surely you can use this data to make it a little smarter? I get the idea and appreciate the effort, but it’s very annoying to get random notifications to exit the bus when you just end up walking near a bus stop that came up in the search.
Needs More Features
I was living in Sydney, Australia and over there they use a similar card called Opal. You can view your balance, top up your card and even change your auto top up settings directly from the app. (I think this may have been a separate app from their route planner actually). I always use Google Maps for route planning but I miss being able to view my balance online from my phone with such ease.
If Auckland Transport creates a similar app or adds these features into this one they will have caught up with the rest of the world. As an additional comment it will be good when the new train stations are finished. Auckland is chaos at the moment but more train stops should equal less cars on the road. Look at Sydney you can stop every 4 blocks in the CBD and every suburb on the way out (unless your going to Bondi Beach then you need a bus from Bondi Junction which is a real nightmare at peak times). I think if Auckland could put a railway onto their harbour bridge like Sydney going to Takapuna it would drastically decrease city traffic for a long time.
Anyway that is my two cents hopefully somebody important takes notice :)
