What’s New

Version 1.2.2

The enhanced forecast page has been redesigned with a new quick glance view. The Metservice data is now displayed in a continuous 5-day sectional view, this allows for an easy-to-read table format. Under the Recreational tab, Auckland has been divided into four new locations: Bream Head to Cape Colville, Hauraki Gulf, Manukau Harbour and Waitemata Harbour. This provides boaties with a more meaningful view relating to the closest geographical area surrounding Auckland, allowing Boaties to see specific conditions closest to their boating location.

Very average app

Not sure why I am reviewing the app as it appears from all the user feedback that the developer is not taking in the feedback or at least acknowledging that a review has been received?

This gets 3 stars only because of the great service Coastguard provides.

Besides all the other issues mentioned: as previously raised, auto refresh of the app would be great particularly for Nowcasting and why can’t Nowcasting use your location to do this update on the home screen when you open the app - like other apps do?

EG: when Nowcasting is used the app opens on the Auckland area, which then requires scrolling down the map to find the Nowcasting area wanted, load it and save it to the home screen - all a bit clunky!!

Developer Response ,

Apologies for the late response, and thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. We’ve recently pushed out the first of two major updates to the app that address functionality and user experience feedback but this is just the start of our vision for the App. As a charity we sure are doing our best to innovate in this space but appreciate there’s always more that can be done.
To address specific points: the Nowcasting does now auto-update, it polls the service at ~4-5 minute intervals. If you keep the app open, the Nowcasting will refresh; if you do close the app, it'll refresh on re-opening. Unfortunately you can't force refresh the Nowcasting.
When you open the app, it should stay logged in for extended periods of time - and the first page should display Nowcasting for the area you've selected (by default is Bean Rock, but you can change this). We're looking to introduce 'favourite' spots in a future release, so you don't need to flick to the map as often.
We're keen for feedback as we strive to make this app the best it can be for boaties. You can email us at info@coastguard.org.nz if you'd like more info. Thank you for your support.

Awful - Much less usable than the old app

Previous Coastguard app was many times better and more useful than this limited effort. We used to be able to get multiple nowcasting sites on a single page and quickly select what we wanted. This current rendition is simply too poorly conceived to be worth anything, and despite being paid, has advertising built in also. We will not be using this much. A pity that the developer threw away all the good points about the old app, and gave us advertisements instead. This is a rock solid clunker. Please ditch it and give us back the far more useful old app. I am a happy Coastguard member and an admirer of the service, but this thing is awful. You can call this thing Trip Reporter if you want, but give us back the decent forecasting and nowcasting.

Reality strikes ,

I’m sorry

The old app was so useful and so informative and generally user friendly - please try to combine the best of the old app into your new (not so good) app. What did I like best - the regional wind readings that showed when they updated - being able to save favourite locations and go to them easily and quickly. I think the trip report aspect of your new app is probably very useful but I prefer to use my vhf. It means I test and practise using it. I don’t like the simplified text or the advertising perhaps in a lone voice but I’d pay more to get the old app back! You provide such a necessary and valuable service to us all but the latest app seems like a step backward. Do you have an api?
