HelloChinese - Learn Chinese 4+

I’m using a few apps to help me learn Chinese. Each of them have their strengths. Where Hello Chinese excels is in how we can record and play back our attempts to speak. The attempts are graded and errors are show, so we know where to improve.
The video clips during lessons showing a person speaking Chinese is also a helpful addition. The lesson voices are design to help us learn the sounds which is far different to someone speaking in real time. Having both is wonderful.
I also appreciate the grammar explanations and teacher talk where the difference between lessons and real spoken Chinese are covered.
For these aspects even the free side of the app is well worth using. As a western English speaking native with a thick accent of my own I can use all the help I can get.

I’ve tried two other apps to learn basic Chinese. This is by far the best! A good mixture of learning techniques such as listening, writing, hearing yourself speak, and watching the videos. I really like being able to see people speak the sentences so you can watch their lips. I find it very helpful. Also, being able to adjust the audio speed is very helpful too. Im hoping as I progress I can speed the audio up to adapt my ear to hearing Chinese spoken naturally. Also, the explanations of characters of grammar etc is very helpful. Thanks!

Can’t really say anything bad about this app , the only thing is that (like for every app of this kind), you can start seeing the pattern of the exercises, and complete all of them without even knowing what you are tapping, but just guessing the more plausible solution. That is true even if you turn off translations.
If I stop exercising for 6 months and restart from where I left, it takes few tries to be able to complete all new exercises without actually knowing any mandarin or being able to actually read the characters. I guess there is no way to fix this, other than that, I think it does everything that it is supposed to do, maybe they should force you to draw the characters, so you cannot just choose from what they suggest, which is the way to find patterns

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Patterns are unavoidable but they were proven to be helpful for your study, but the trade-off is as obvious as you described - learners like you may accurately locate to the correct answer even if not quite familiar with the words/grammar. We will keep that in mind while making the new courses to minimize the cons from introducing patters.
As for the feature suggestion for forcing learners to draw the characters... we will consider that as well.
