It’s functional. Poor interface design. Dated aesthetic but it gives me the weather and also some features that are badly implemented and get in the way of telling me the weather. As someone who actually paid for this app many, many years ago, I’ve come to terms that I now get served ads (although now they’re offering me the option to pay a monthly subscription to not get adds).Who’s advising them? Please, I implore you - get them to think about human centred design - do proper UX research - get them to think who this app is for. It wouldn’t cost much to scrap this mess and start from scratch with an actual strategy ... and give us an app to be proud of. Come on people, if not for me ... then for New Zealand!
Great but not worthy yet
Jizzai
I was hoping to use this as my default weather app but it’s slower to load; location detection is off - picking up neighbouring suburbs; and it appears to be buggy - I literally just deleted and reinstalled the app to get it working again as it was endlessly loading i.e. the spinning icon just kept spinning and spinning. It worked correctly for about a week before this started happening, and it never recovered. Caching issue perhaps?Great app with copious amounts of information, but I think it’s trying to do too much on the landing screen. My suggestion to the decision makers is to make the first section - above the 1st ad - the landing screen. Then under the 1st ad have a button to load more detail, which will load the rest of the information to the screen as it currently looks now. This will reduce loading time and display quickly the information which majority of users will want to know. I hardly ever scroll down - the 48 hour forecast suits my needs 90% of the time. Anybody who wants more detail can tap the button and wait for it to load. Only then is it justifiable to have a user wait for load time when they’re tapping a button that indicates it has to load something up, but not when opening an app. The information needs to load quickly, especially when in a rush and needing to decide what to wear and if an umbrella is needed, last thing you want to do in a hurry is to watch an icon spin around. The default weather app is light and does this perfectly, it’s just less accurate than MetService.
Update to review
Disgruntled of Wellington
Original review: The old app was fantastic. I liked the content, layout and presentation - and the ability to personalise with photos. This new app has a horrible, dated design, causes my phone to freeze, makes it hard to check forecasts in other places and has ads in it. I can't think of anything nice to say about it.Update: since the new app was launched, I have cycled between installing and deleting the app several times. Metservice has great content and while the website is good, an app is my preferred channel, so I’ve given it some more chances. It’s good to see the many improvements that have been made since it was first launched; it’s where it should have been on launch day. I’ll probably end up deleting it again though and sticking with the website because of the little avatar. It’s minor but for me it’s an unnecessary design feature that has bugged me since its inception and now has baggage (and I have asked for it to be removable, at least, previously). I’ll try again in a few months.
Widget displays incorrect information
tobeyguac
I’ve used this app as a widget on my phone for years. In recent times, the weather and location displayed in the widget is increasingly wrongs - probably around 80% of the time these days. It defaults back to a suburb I lived in over 18 months ago and the temperature does not update throughout the day. For example, it will say that I am in this particular suburb and the temperature is 1 degree all day long, even if I have not been in that suburb at all that day and the temperature is now 14 degrees. It shows the correct location and temperature when opening the app, just not in the widget which is very annoying. I have updated the app and no change. Time to remove it from my home screen as it is far too annoying. Hopefully an update will fix this issue. Going by the number of similar complaints there are many others wanting this fix as well.
A quick setup flow to make it easy for users to enable warning notifications; enabling the premium ad free option permanently; small bugfixes and improvements.
