Stars
I would rate higher but when I choose to use my stars to go another round, it takes my stars and I still lose! Not very good.
Checkpoints
Checkpoints don't save which is a hassle when you've worked hard to get to a certain level

Hi, checkpoints last only for one game. Checkpoints are the reward mechanism for clearing up the screen allowing you to start the next game from that level. If on one game you don't manage to get one (neither by clearing screen or buying one on game over), next game you start from level 1.
