Ratings and Reviews
Oxford Dictionary - wonderful
Definitions are full, shown by example, all meanings are offered etc. And it would use the word “define” rather than the dumbing down words, now used on the iPad, “look up” when the user needs a dictionary! I have a 2 volume Oxford on my bookshelves and have yet to find anything of equal quality. Raewyn NZ.
JUST a Basic Dictionary - Could Be So Much More
3 stars because this dictionary is useful and very regularly used but at the same time it always leaves me wanting.
Is is JUST a dictionary, and for me a somewhat basic one at that. There is no thesaurus, no synonyms or antonyms, no etymology, worth mentioning; far too many words have “origin unknown”. The definitions lack explanation of nuances between words with similar meaning and example sentences often need explanation. When I think of a dictionary I think of it having all of these components and I am willing to pay a bit more.
Word of the day - I note that when looking up “word of the day” in multiple dictionaries, at least 50% of the words are completely missing from this Oxford English dictionary, which can not be attributed solely to the differences between British and American English, for example. Also, the words of the day are invariably useless in expanding my everyday vocabulary, which is what I expect from the feature, they are either so basic I already know and use them or they are words one would have to try very hard to shoehorn into everyday conversations. There are words between these extremes.
P.S. I wonder at why my thoughts on this app are so divergent from RaewynBlair’s.
Great app but terrible updates!
As a dictionary it is next to flawless and the interface is comprehensible and neat. However, after years of usage and plenty of ”favourites” one update erased them all without a warning. That is just careless customer service. I’d expect that from free apps but this is not a cheap one so I had set my bar of trust a wee bit higher. I wish they would have warned against keeping it up-to-date if it meant erasing a big portion of my way of using its interface. I’m now back to the vocabulary of Zoya from Glow...
