RNZ is an excellent source of NZ and Pacific news, and it’s great to have it all present in one app.Just a few frustrations: The ‘RNZ Player’ screen conceals the iOS status bar, so when the audio stream cuts out it’s not obvious if it was a signal strength issue or something else. It also hides the clock in the status bar. There are no space constraints so I just don’t understand this user-hostile design decision. Also, the app is not optimised for iPad; and the play/stop button icons are so small that from across the room you can’t tell the player status (again, frustrating for troubleshooting when the stream cuts out).
Developer Response
Kia ora, thanks so much for this feedback. I've passed it along to our developers for their consideration as we keep making design and feature improvements to the app.
FONT SIZE MATTERS

So just so you know I do this with every news app but lately perhaps my ratings have gotten lower because I’m SO SICK OF TINY FONTS ON NEWS APPS. I don’t understand why so many of them (and it is all of the ones I’ve ever used) have tiny tiny writing and either no option or extremely (comically) limited options to make them bigger AND bolder. So many people have bad eyesight, I’m wearing glasses right now as I’m typing this, they are the right prescription but still I struggle when I switch to smaller fonts because I’m used to being able to put the font size up / zoom in on just about any device and app I use … and the difference is extremely noticeable when I go down a few font sizes. It’s very frustrating. Sorry this is the only problem with RNZ that I have at all… *RNZ is an excellent app apart from this* and to be fair it’s all news apps not just RNZ but… literally every other non-news app that requires a lot of reading has an option to increase the font size and my iPhone has a ‘bold’ setting and I’m genuinely baffled that news apps don’t have these very very basic accessibility options. ****I understand that there is a lot of rich formatting in news apps. I’m aware that it’s not the same as a simple e-reader or an internet browser.**** BUT… ***you should be taking it upon yourselves to improve the readability of your content given how many people have poor eyesight***. And if you can only use one font size, i.e. if you can’t give people multiple options, for the love of god just make it all bigger. It’s not hard. Sorry. My eyes are tired!
Great content , but navigation is a faff.
rtrcountdown
I have been using the RNZ app now for about four months, yet, it will not stick in my head how to get back to “listen live” quickly, without clicking all over the place to eventually get there. The listen live feature should be prominent and easily accessible , yet something in the way this is laid out is preventing me from getting to it at first attempt. I then asked other friends about this to see if it’s my head , but they both immediately agreed with this issue of listen live being tricky to find , you end up on earlier news programmes, it’s frustrating when you’re out Covid walking and get blasted in the ear by things you don’t want , or miss the beginning of the news because you’re on a previous edition.
Technical glitch
Seleti
Love the app, we are unable to get RNZ on the radio where we live but enjoy being able to use the app to keep up with what is happening in NZ. Just lately we have noticed that the playback will often jump back a few minutes from the current live stream and then after some time jump forward. This has only started happening in the last few weeks so am assuming it’s a buffering problem, but wondered if you were aware of it? FYI Our internet connection is fibre . Thanks for the great app.
A maintenance release to ensure the app is running smoothly for you.
