Ratings and Reviews
Great content, poor app
The stories are great, but a few things in the app really irk me, and make it a weaker experience than reading The Spinoff website.
Photos are often blurry, looking awful on retina iPads; there is no support for reading in landscape orientation; and the iOS feature of tapping the status bar to scroll to the top is disabled by this app (in fact, the title bar is hidden altogether so you can’t see the time or battery/Wi-Fi status while using this app).
If you want to support The Spinoff, just browse the website without adblockers instead. It’ll save you $6 and much regret.
Terrible iPad support
Please put more effort into properly supporting all sizes of the iPad in both orientations. Even on the iPhone everything is way too big - you can barely even see the titles of two articles on the screen at once because of far too much whitespace and giant pictures everywhere. But on the iPad Pro 12.9”, it’s just ridiculous. Forced portrait orientation even though a lot of people use this device in landscape orientation with an attached keyboard; the coloured bars blocking half of the screen; 150pt text with about 4 words on each line; and the pictures don’t have a high enough resolution to justify making them the entire width of the screen. The app also hasn’t been updated to properly support the size of the device’s screen. I’ve used a lot of iOS apps, and this is probably the one with the most actively hostile user interface I have ever seen.
Look at other news apps. “Above the fold” on the main screen of The Guardian’s app (in landscape mode, I might add) I can see as many as twelve article titles on the screen at the same time.
Why do you offer an app if it’s a deliberately worse experience than just going to your website?
Good news, reasonable app.
I think if you value good journalism in New Zealand in the vacancy left behind by the descent of The Herald and Stuff into click bait, "reddit journalism", "someone got insulted", etc please support this app. Usually my favourite reads of the week come from the spinoff now.
As for the app, I give it 4 stars not 5 as it would be great to improve a couple of things:
- can we have the swiping left/right between articles and instant loading that you get when you read the spinoff on the facebook app? It feels much nicer but we support your goals to free yourself of facebook.
- on iPad I'd love a landscape view. Everything else on the iPad I do in landscape pretty much.
