What’s New

Version 5.17.20

Is it summer? No. But it’s palpably close. Queues have started forming at the ice cream shop next to the office, our SPF 100 sunscreen is back in the tote bag, and we’ve finally bid adieu to the toe warmers we’ve packed in our bike shoes all spring long.

Now that the ides of March (and April… and May…) are thankfully behind us, the seeds of a very busy spring at Transit HQ are now bearing big juicy mangos for you to behold:

- Bike. Transit. Bike. That’s right: the moment you’ve been waiting for… and sending us many polite DMs about… has finally arrived: you can now plan multimodal transit trips that include your personal bike on BOTH SIDES of a transit trip, not just one.
- (If you’re more of a “park and ride” multimodal biker? You can swap double-ended bike trip suggestions for one-way bike trips in the settings.)
- Thanks to our dev Quan for helping us set a speed record on Strava for Lionel-Groulx to Jean-Talon! Just kidding, we would never…

- Bonjour, AutoGO! We’ve been slow-rolling this one, so you may have seen this in the wild… but we’re now able to match you to transit vehicles *as soon as you open the app* mid-bus ride
- What does this mean? It means you can now start a GO trip in a single tap, without having to first plan a trip or manually select a line
- Thanks to AutoGO, we’re now getting a boost in GO trips started (over 1M trips auto-detected so far!) which helps us improve your city’s real-time data
- Big kudos for our data science magicians, Marisa, Quentin, and Ayser, for all their brilliant work on this
- Curious how GO’s making your city’s real-time data better? We got a new bloggity-blog all about it: blog.transit.app/autogo

- Lastly, we just launched our 900th supported city, ooh yeah
- Hello Guadeloupe, Réunion, and a few other hamlets and shires
- Un gros merci to our transit analysts: Brody, Derek, Elijah, Marco, Sara, Tim, plus our recently-returned veteran DJ Nic for bringing Transit to more and more places, faster than ever before
- (We hope you have the breath capacity for the number of candles you’re gonna have to blow out at the next Transit office party!)
- Anything else?

Yes. Something big. Something huge.

We’ll give you half-a-dozen guesses but we’ll only be able to do the big reveal in August…

Rate us five stars if you love cliffhanger release notes.

Editors' Notes

This travel planning app shows you how to get from A to B via train, bus, ride-share – even bike-share and scooter. It will find you the best route, offer a few alternates, and let you know how long it’ll take.

Pretty effective, but could be improved

Basically this app does the job, pretty darn well. I’m guessing it’s doing quite a few trade offs and clever things behind the scenes and it all comes together to tell me what I need to know. Kudos.

That said, it’s kind of a quirky app that I can’t help feeling is a little ‘over designed’. Some parts of the user experience are kind of odd because they’ve been too clever, such as not making the cancel or back buttons very clear. The timeline of incoming buses is clever but not actually too easy to use on a phone.

I also feel it’s quite cluttered. The view of a route after I select it is trying to tell me lots of things that I mostly don’t care about and the most important one, when the bus will arrive, is not very obvious and is only shown in relative time in a tiny font.

Works in all of NZ’s main centres!

Way better than downloading five or six local apps that you use infrequently, just get this one and keep using it when you’re travelling! I’ve personally used the app in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Couple things that takes it down a peg for me is that it does not show cancellation information for Metlink Wellington, I still have to check their terrible app to get that info, and the Māori pronunciation in the app is terrible.
