Description

NOT JUST ANOTHER MEDITATION APP
Don’t think of Waking Up as a conventional meditation app—think of it as a new operating system for your mind, and a guide to living a better life.

We aim to offer a far deeper approach to mindfulness than you’ll find elsewhere—one that fundamentally transforms how you see yourself, and the world around you.

But you’ll also discover life-changing, secular wisdom from top scholars and experts, on everything from sleep and doing good in the world to time management and happiness.

Waking Up is free for anyone who can’t afford it. We never want money to be the reason why someone can’t benefit from what we’ve built.

***Created by Sam Harris
Sam Harris, neuroscientist and best-selling author, built Waking Up to be the resource he wished he’d had when he began exploring meditation over 30 years ago.

Sam only includes those practices and insights he’s found to be utterly life-changing. The same is true for the many teachers, scholars, and experts you’ll meet throughout the app.

***A step-by-step approach to mindfulness
We’ve heard from thousands of members who say they never really understood meditation until they took our 28-part Introductory Course.

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner, you’ll dive straight into the deep end of real mindfulness, so you don’t waste any time on the surface.

***Learn the true purpose of meditation
Meditation is about more than just relieving stress, sleeping better, or improving your focus. While it can help you do all of that, our goal is ultimately to help you open the door to a deeper understanding of yourself.

***A place for serious seekers
Explore some of life’s most important questions, on topics like neuroscience, psychedelics, enlightenment, ethics, and Stoicism—from renowned authors and professors like Oliver Burkeman, Michael Pollan, Laurie Santos, Arthur C. Brooks, James Clear, and others.

***In-depth theory and practice
Waking Up explains both the theory and the practice of meditation —so you don’t just learn the “how” of mindfulness, but also the “why.”

You’ll be guided by prominent figures like Joseph Goldstein, Diana Winston, Adyashanti, Jayasāra, and Henry Shukman, who teach a wide range of contemplative practices, including Vipassana, Zen, Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, and more.

***Timeless insights, modern lens
Within Waking Up, you’ll find some of the most profound spiritual teachings from throughout history—those that have stood the test of time. And you’ll hear from historic voices like Alan Watts.

But we also pressure-test ancient wisdom against modern science, so you won’t find outlandish claims or anything we haven’t found to be empirically true.

***A comprehensive guide
Waking Up supports your growth and development in a number of different ways. You’ll find an abundance of useful features, like meditation timers, in-app support messages, an ever-growing audio library, and daily reminders to help bring your mindfulness practice into your life—plus, Waking Up allows you to save all of your meditation sessions to your Apple Health app.

“Waking Up is, hands down, the most important meditation guide I’ve ever used.” Physician Peter Attia

“If you’ve had trouble getting into meditation, this app is your answer!” -Susan Cain, best-selling author

“Waking Up is not an app, it’s a path. It is equal parts a meditation guide, a philosophy master-class and a highly-focused TED Conference.” -Eric Hirschberg, former CEO of ACTIVISION

My opinion

This is only my second day using the app. I have been one of those people to scoff at meditating or to try here & there & never have progress. I was introduced by a friend & they showed me how to meditate their way. It didn’t work for me. I also tried different ways of meditative actions like yoga, candle gazing, walking in nature etc. they all felt nice but it never helped my true struggle of being mindful. So I fell out after a while. After one day of doing the introductory course in waking up, I found myself being able to stop my habitual spiral of thoughts. In 1 day!!
I also have had a struggle to let go of things that are out of my control & struggled with the compulsiveness to know & have answers to everything I think & every way others behave. Today I’ve been able to let that go & like I said, it’s only my second day. I’m 21 & it’s only the start to my mindfulness journey but, this is the only thing that has worked for me & I’m so grateful. I actually feel it’s achievable to become the person I want to be & to cut bad traits and negative habits of the person I no longer want to be. I truly recommend trying this app, they also give u free 6 months if u request it. I grew up with so much trauma and misguided influences so I’ve had to try very hard becoming self aware to be able to stop negative character traits I have. I hope someone reads this & at least gives it a try. There’s no risk in trying & there’s everything to gain. :)

Simply magnificent

It wasn’t until I started practicing meditation with Sam’s guidance that I began to understand what meditation could mean. With merely 1627 minutes of meditation using Waking Up, the way I experience the world has shifted. Less reactivity; more awareness. My mind is, as I’ve now discovered, rather wild.

Sam has structured the app well. The 50 day introductory course taught me the ways in which I can practice meditation. In particular, Sam guides one through the spectrum of possible ‘objects’ in one’s subjective experience of consciousness. Sam also introduces loving-kindness mediation. Previously, I had no idea what this mediation was. The name of the mediation felt almost cheesy. The practice itself did feel contrived at first, as Sam mentions. However, the more I practice, the more natural the practice becomes, and the more I can relate to others with warmth and kindness.

My journey in the practice meditation has just begun, and Sam’s guidance has been transformative. I can’t recommend this app enough! Have a wonderful day :)

It really is a life changing app

I have been a fan of Sam Harris for a long time. At first I was a bit of a meditation skeptic but after hearing Sam and Yuval Harari talk about it, I gave the app a go. I’ve done 200 sessions and it’s kind of bizarre to think how much it has helped me. I am the kind of person who is frequently lost in thought and for me the main benefit I’ve experienced is being able to recognize my thoughts and react accordingly or most often just not react at all. It’s incredible how much this can affect your moods and just your overall well being. I do also really love the theory section and I think they are immensely useful to people who want to understand the reasoning behind it all. I also have to give a lot of credit to the simplicity of the app and just how easy it is to use. I am immensely grateful to Sam and his team and I reckon I’ll be using the app for a long time.
