Getting beaten at chess by a 7-year-old is hard to take. But when this child is Norwegian grandmaster and current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen, you have a pretty decent excuse for failure.

Play Magnus is a chess game and coaching app that allows you to take on the chess prodigy at different stages of his life, from age five up to 27.

You have a decent chance of winning against Carlsen at age five.

If you’re starting from scratch, Play Magnus lets you start with the basics, helping you learn the more complex rules and strategies and then throws you into an ever-increasing challenge.

There are no easy or hard levels to choose from, instead you take on an opponent that matches Carlsen’s abilities at the age you select.

You can brush up on the basics, too.

Be warned, even playing Magnus at age five is a challenge – after all, he played his first tournament when he was eight and only a year later he beat his father for the first time.

When you’ve worked your way past Magnus’ various avatars you’ll be more than ready to take on other players in online matches.

And maybe by that time you’ll be well equipped to beat someone who’s not yet old enough to shave.
