Tandem: Conversation exchange
Practice 300+ languages
If you’ve ever tried to learn a foreign language you know the only way to get truly proficient is to talk with native speakers. Tandem, a social network for language-learners, can help with that.
Start by creating a profile, where you’ll identify which languages you currently speak, the ones you’d like to learn, and any topics (music, travel, the weather) you prefer chatting about.
You’ll then be able to search for other Tandem members to talk to within the app, either over chat or video. Apply filters to have the app show you only native speakers or those living in a certain location (so you can learn Brazilian Portuguese from a Brazilian, for example).
Tandem even helps you get the conversation started. When you first send a message to someone, you can have the app translate it for you. Once you’ve established a relationship, you and your partner have the option to video-call.
Tandem is also a great way to find a language tutor, all of whom have been vetted. You can schedule a session right in the app and check out using Apple Pay.
New users may be placed on a waiting list if there aren’t enough people who meet your criteria to chat with. Signing up for a monthly subscription lets you skip the line and helps keep the basic service free for everyone.
