Description

Apollo was a powerful and customizable Reddit app for iOS

Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.

Again, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!

Editors’ Notes

Apollo for Reddit is an excellent alternative to the official app, with stacks of useful features and tons of settings you can tweak for an even more personalized Reddit experience. Apollo has clearly been designed by someone who spends a lot of time on Reddit, because the app is full of things that’ll delight power users.

Pleasant Surprise

Been using the official Reddit mobile app for years. It always felt clunky but tolerable, I didn’t notice just how many promoted posts were getting pushed in the app. Dropped it after an iOS bug reached live where users were randomly sent to videos, even including graphic videos of violence.

Looked for a simple, plain app just to replace it. Tried this out since the images looked nice. 15 minutes with Apollo and I love it. Differently colored subcomments allowing for instantly tracking which comments are in reply to what, effortlessly hiding a whole chain of comments, gestures on comments, and the beautiful media viewer! The little taps of vibration for actions like voting add an unexpected level of interactivity that the official Reddit app doesn’t even touch.

Tl;dr - it’s easy to use, well-organized, and excellent!

About the app restarting too quickly

I really love the app and I use it over the reddit app but there’s just one hiccup for me which is the app itself restarts way too quickly when I don’t use it for a couple of minutes and when it does I have to go back from the top again and I have already seen the post so i have to scroll down which is a hassle really. if you could make a way to stop the app from refreshing way too quickly that would be nice or add on a feature that hides the already scrolled posts I know there is a feature where you can hide the posts you have already seen but I don’t tap on the posts one by one mostly I just scroll down so if you could add a feature that hides scrolled posts that would b perfect! I really love this app the way it was built with love. If you can make this feature I would be truly grateful. Ohh and I already supported by buying the in app purchases on this app.
