Avo!

A magical adventure

VIEW

Imagine a kids’ TV favourite, but you can reach into the screen and control bits of the action. You’ve almost got Avo – a clever ‘playable TV’ adventure powered by some really impressive technology.

Between chunks of story starring sparky science buff Billie, you control Avo, who toddles off along the dotted line you draw into the world with a stroke of your finger.

Guiding little Avo around the world is easy – and there are glowing red jellybeans to collect along the way.

Mostly this means getting Avo from A to B without running into trouble, but it’s nice to see that playfulness is rewarded throughout. Stray off-piste and you’ll be rewarded with fun little asides, like having Avo bust a move to the radio, try on some of those foamy teeth-like sweets or dip himself in shiny gold paint for a fetching new look.

The story, a caper about baddies trying to steal science whizz Billie’s outlandish inventions, is alot of fun too. And the performances and production values throughout are of the standard you’d expect from a kids TV show. An expensively-made one, at that.

You can’t help but be charmed by Billie and Avo’s offbeat adventures.

Avo is the first game from new studio Playdeo, and it’s a remarkably polished and impressive debut; we get the feeling that this is just the beginning for its adventures in ‘playable TV’.
