Markdown makes it easy to apply basic text formatting using simple tags (such as #, * and -). But it can be difficult to envision how your prose will ultimately appear when published on your blog or website. Wouldn’t it be great to see exactly how that content will look on the web as you write in Markdown? That’s where Marked 2 comes in.

While composing in your favourite text editor, just drag your document into Marked and a window appears that shows how everything will look when formatted, including styles, links, images, captions, footnotes, checklists and more.

Marked shows how your Markdown text will appear when converted to HTML; its Keyword Drawer even highlights passive voice and words that are overused or should be avoided.

In addition to several preview options, the app supports custom CSS sheets to replicate the appearance of your blog or site. And its preview updates whenever you save changes to your document – no need to jump through hoops to see the latest version.

Marked can do more than just previews. As you write, it can show word and character counts, highlight any word repetition, provide readability statistics and even let you know when you’re using that pesky passive voice. In other words, it shows you not just your writing but how to write better.

Once you’ve dotted your i’s and crossed your t’s, Marked makes it easy to turn your text into HTML. Just choose Edit > Copy HTML Source (or press Shift-Command-C) to copy the HTML version of your document, complete with all formatting, to your clipboard. Alternatively, export your document to HTML, PDF, Rich Text, Word or other formats, which is useful if you want to send, say, a preview of a web document to a client or editor.

Document statistics show the word and character counts, reading level and more.

In addition to working seamlessly with text editors such as iA Writer, Ulysses and Bear, Marked integrates with robust writing apps like Scrivener to preview compiled documents and MarsEdit for live previews of posts. It can even collate multiple files of long-form works – like sections or chapters – and present a preview of the final product, or let you export the compiled work.

The app also lets developers preview code with syntax highlighting, using custom text processors to support any language. You can use fenced code blocks, preview mathematical formulas with MathJax and validate the links in a document, making Marked a remarkable complement to your existing tools.
