Great way to learn and practice foreign languages. New words are jumping in randomly to memorize. Mistakes correction in place. Nothing is lost. Also possibility to have dialogues with AI makes it more attractive and supports probabilistic practice and corrections. All easy and intuitive. Great idea to learn foreign languages while using another foreign language as system language! Also built-in Chess playing tutorial and other games. Duolingo is actually a game or competition type learning platform enabling also to follow friends as well as team learning efforts setting. Also good idea with daily remainders and small daily targets as well as weekly, bi-weekly, monthly etc targets with prize. All this makes you feel the desire for getting points and achievements while enjoying learning language. This is really something. I’m after 9 days of German and happy to say that I tripled the amount of new words. I’m already thinking to engage Spanish but maybe closer to 2027 when my German lifts up. Don’t hesitate to subscribe Duolingo. If you follow the desire for improvement, it will help you and though pay back quick.
Used to be great

After recent update you have 25 energy not 5 hearts. Previously you was losing heart after mistake, but now you lose energy after every exercise. After perfect lesson you have less energy so you can’t do as much lessons as before. You can always recharge a little after watching adds but there is bigger problem. As final part as lesson you can do more difficult version of exercises. As free to practice you can’t do it now. Those exercises takes two times more energy. Even if you are doing perfect you can’t finish it achieving more exp. I just try to do that. I had 23 energy and I did only one mistake. I did 75% of that lesson and run out of energy. I don’t even have mark that lesson as complete. That’s ridiculous. Freezing your strike is really expensive so why should I pay 600 to finish lesson. I just can’t afford both. There are lessons you can buy so I don’t need one that seems to be free but then you realize that if you want to finish it you have to spend your diamonds. You don’t pay and you don’t have lesson complete and any energy left. I feel like keeping strike is not worth it. Some more changes making doing your lessons impossible to do and I feel like uninstalling Duolingo. I don’t mind add but I hate the idea of making me spending. In the same time I’m so broke that I can’t afford super Duolingo or anything. For learning is still good app. It makes studying easier.

Duolingo has taught me a lot, especially when I was a beginner in Spanish, but the new update is horrible. It seems that the radio and story elements of the course are now made using AI and it shows. They sound really unnatural and often don't make any sense. The sections are now way too short for the amount of vocabulary and I feel like I'm not learning anything. Some problems I had even before the update are that the course is Mexican Spanish (just guessing, not an expert in Spanish variations, but definitely a more Latin American version) and you can't choose Spain Spanish, so, for example, my answers are not accepted if I use the vosotros collocation of the verbs. There are so many differences between all the Spanish variations, that I think either all forms should be accepted or there should be two separate courses for Latin American Spanish and European (Spain) Spanish. Another one is that the app doesn't explain grammar, so you have to look for information on your own and often it's even more difficult, because the section / unit doesn't say which tense is being used. I also tried learning Swedish on Duolingo and the course is way worse than the Spanish one, I could barely learn anything from it. All in all it used to be a great addition to my Spanish learning process (never my main learning source), but now I'm thinking of canceling my subscription 😕
Our mascot owl, Duo, is trading in his usual diet of mice for bugs this week. Yup, we’re squashing those pesky bugs to make the experience better for all of you.
