With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

The best out there

I have tried a lot of language apps and Duolingo is the one that works best for me. The effort that is put into these essentially free courses is astounding.
I want to give a particular shoutout to the French course because while in other courses you’re sometimes flying blind at first, in the French one you get short grammar explanations which make it into a full learning experience.
I also love how this is the only app that really pays attention to its visual side with the fun and, most importantly (and unusually), consistent illustrations. This might actually be on some level the main reason I always get back to Duo over other apps. It also develops and changes all the time, every couple of weeks surprising me with a new small tweak.
And, last but not least, it works. After a couple of months I notice a huge improvement in my French with very little effort. Looking forward to continuing this one and other courses.
(And if I may have one small request: please make the Latin course bigger.)

Nice, BUT…

A cool app, nice graphics and good at motivating. HOWEVER. There are some things that really bother me. In the English course teaching Spanish, the language is actually Mexican Spanish, some words simply do not work in Spain. When I learn Spanish with the Spanish flag being the symbol, I would like to learn S P A N I S H please. There are also some mistakes in the Polish course teaching English. Some are not of great importance, but some are. Had I not known English rather well, I would never be able to understand even basic rules from this course (I checked out of curiosity, I’m Polish). It is a shame that the tips you advertise so much appear in what seems to be maybe 3-4 courses, if not less. The new outlook is awful as well. Stories were a cool idea as long as you could choose when and which one to read, plus to have the Conversation Mode available. In most of the courses you cannot even see what you learn in which unit since there are no descriptions. Before, if you wanted to learn or revise e.g. food vocabulary, you could easily find it, now that feature exists no longer. The only thing that keeps me from quitting is the streak that I have. It is no longer fun or interesting in that version, only confusing and disappointing. Please go back to the previous outlook.
