Description

Signal is a messaging app with privacy at its core. It is free and easy to use, with strong end-to-end encryption that keeps your communication completely private.

• Send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Signal uses your phone’s data connection, so you avoid SMS and MMS fees.

• Call your friends with crystal-clear encrypted voice and video calls. Group calls supported for up to 40 people.

• Stay connected with group chats up to 1,000 people. Control who can post and manage group members with admin permission settings.

• Share image, text, and video Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Privacy settings keep you in charge of exactly who can see each Story.

• Signal is built for your privacy. We know nothing about you or who you’re talking to. Our open source Signal Protocol means that we can’t read your messages or listen to your calls. Neither can anyone else. No back doors, no data collection, no compromises.

• Signal is independent and not for profit; a different kind of tech from a different kind of organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit we are supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors.

What’s New

Version 7.8

• We added support for custom nicknames and notes for anyone you're chatting with on Signal, even if they aren't in your system contacts. Whether you're adding the missing letters in a lazy friend's profile name, or a reminder about where you met, notes and nicknames provide a convenient and secure way to jot down additional details about your Signal Connections — and they're end-to-end encrypted and protected by your Signal PIN so they can be securely restored if you lose your phone too.

Signal is almost perfect!

From time to time some visual bugs can be surprising, like disappearing backgrounds in menus or some spacing of elements changing suddenly.

I would really love an option to choose the alternative icon, like reversed one, blue on white background or maybe something else.

And the most powerful change for me would be the option to make corrections in messages for like 10 - 30 seconds from sending — this could be just a basic function or requiring in the conversation or group acceptance from everyone.

Very good app with 2 minor details

Edit: After years of using the app I have to give it one star. Turns out, your media files are held hostage on iOS with no easy way to export media files. If you loose your phone, you loose your data. No backup option at all. This is such a core feature , that I can’t give more stars. Original review: This is much better app compared to Facebook messenger or what’s app. 1. No advertisements anywhere 2. Photos sent through Signal are MUCH higher quality 3. You know that your conversations will stay private, and not analyzed by a state or advertisers like on Facebook. However the app can’t completely replace Facebook Messenger, because you need to give others your phone number I don’t want to give my phone number to coworkers, random girls or people from uni (much bigger damage can be made if someone pranks you with putting your number on random sites). But for friends, family, people you usually talk to using this app makes so much better experience. Second minor detail is that you still can’t copy/ backup easily and automatically all conversation history from phone to PC. Other than that this app is really good.

Signal is my main messaging app but…

Everything was great until I needed to transfer my messages to the new iPhone. Constant errors when scanning QR (occurred that finding iPhones in local area was disabled on the older phone), but it should give instantly a proper solution instead of throwing meaningless errors. Later, when data was transferred and I had an access to all messages on the new phone, an error occurred that the phone number was unregistered (although I had to register it at the very beginning of the whole process!) so I couldn’t send or receive any messages. Ended up in registering again and losing all the data (because data on the old phone is automatically removed after transferring it). I have never seen such a problematic process of transferring data in any app.
