This traditional run-and-gun looks and sounds like a retro classic – but it has a few twists up its sleeve.
We’re in the near-future and a meteorite has hit Earth, turning most of the population into blue-skinned zombies. As part of a team of researchers, you’re looking for a cure. But your scientists need study samples. And what better way to get them than by hunting the infected with unfeasibly powerful weapons?
The action is fast and fluid as you run, leap, wall-kick and shoot your way through a variety of enemies, humanoid and otherwise. Alongside the infected are floating tentacled nasties and weird blobs with eyes that suddenly leap towards you.
Luckily, you can double-tap in any direction to roll away from danger. But with spiked pits, metal crushers and worms dropping from the ceiling, you need to be careful not to dodge your way into more trouble – especially since you’ve only one life to play with.
You can pick up spare rounds from fallen foes, but you’ll want to make every shot count. Your health and ammo carries over to the next stage, and while underground traders can top you up – and sell you new guns – paying to patch yourself up may leave you short of cash for bullets.
And you’ll need plenty of firepower for the game’s imposing boss enemies. A giant bloated fly sends swarms of smaller critters after you, while you can expect a frosty reception from the guardian at the end of the ice world.
With a range of heroes to choose from – each with their own strengths, weaknesses and starter weapons – Cure Hunters is the kind of game you’ll go back to even once you’ve helped your scientist buddies create that humanity-saving vaccine.
