The world of Thumper is a striking mix of metal, neon, swirling tendrils, shattered rock and fluorescent fog. But don’t get distracted by the scenery. You won’t last very long.
This rhythm game starts out simply; just tap the screen to the music when lights in the track hurtle underneath your vehicle. But soon, there are corners to contend with, barriers to duck and spikes to leap.
Fail to negotiate them properly and you might just scrape through, but equally your craft – which is a shiny metallic robot beetle, of course – might come a cropper completely. Time to dust yourself off and have another go.
Keep up with the relentless pace, dodge the hazards hurtling at you and you’ll even reach boss battles, where negotiating a tricky sequence gives you the chance to ‘fire’ at your foe with a decisive, impeccably-timed tap.
It gets tough quickly, no question. But get into a flow and it's more than worth the effort. Chaining together a run of taps and swipes in Thumper makes you feel like a godlike videogame ninja and some abstract dubstep producer from the future.
