Chronicle - Bill Organizer

Track bills & subscriptions

View

Keeping track of your bills and expenses is almost as unpleasant as paying them. Chronicle can help by organising your rent or mortgage, internet and TV fees, insurance, car payments – anything you have to pay, whether regularly or occasionally – and reminding you when they’re due. Plus it features super-useful payment-tracking and budget-planning tools to help you set and meet your financial goals.

What we love: How simple it is to track your bills, subscriptions and other regular payments. When adding a new expense, choose a category, set a due date and the payment interval, and optionally add the URL for online payment. Chronicle will notify you when each bill is due and incorporate those payments into your forecast and history. (The at-a-glance overviews of your monthly and annual expenses are especially useful.)

The Overview screen shows a summary of upcoming bill dates; click any item for details and history.

Quick tip: Don’t miss Chronicle’s planning features: enter your salary and other income and the app calculates what’s left after your bills are paid each month; the Forecast view shows your costs and income and lets you know how much you can spend if you want to splurge. And sign up for a Chronicle Pro subscription to sync your data across devices so you can view, add and edit your bills on Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Meet the creator: LittleFin founder Mike Dattolo learned to code by using AppleScript to automate tasks. Early versions of Chronicle (originally released in 2008) were written almost entirely in AppleScript, using scripting integrations with the Finder and Calendar for features like reminders and attaching receipts. His favourite Chronicle feature is Amount To Save, which looks at expenses that occur only occasionally (for example, an annual car tune-up) and calculates how much to set aside each month to cover them.
