This fascinating, highly symbolic oil painting, likely made at the end of the Tudor queen’s life, reveals a great deal about the pomp and circumstance of her lengthy reign, as well as how portraiture served strategically as a way for the sovereign to shape her image, assert power, and maintain the loyalty of her subjects.
