Being well informed
I’m not British or live in Britain, yet the Spectator is invaluable in keeping me abreast the most significant issues in British politics with an excellent commentary on the continent’s and America’s politics too. No stridency.
Opinion
There appears to be a view that columnists have a right to express their personal opinions. Who could argue against that right ? Let me try.
We all know about opinions. Everyone has one. So why should I listen the views of a particular columnist on a particular topic ? Only if they have a significant and important experience in the area of that topic. Or, they are mathematically competent and can explain the drivers of a particular outcome, from a relevant and robust data set. Too often I am reading opinions from columnists that have neither any personal experience, or understanding of the relevant data, around a topic.
Please amass a range of contributors to offer insight to their relevant professional backgrounds, which MUST be supported by relevant data. Otherwise all I am getting are lightweight social media ‘influencers’.
Democracy today is not based on the freedom of expression now we have some much noise (ideology) masquerading as expression. Whenever the Spectator makes a point I want to see the supporting evidence. This probably leads to fewer but deeper articles.
The Spectator is well behind the WSJ in providing the numbers. Please focus on closing the gap. Numbers not noise.
Great magazine
Great magazine with in-depth articles and great columnists. So different from the light and political correctness we are currently used to.
Another hundred years at least, please.
