With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

Good for a foundation level knowledge

Personally I went the extra mile since I am dedicated to learn Swedish, and I bought a year's worth of Super Duolingo. With this, it's much more appealing to learn consistently, every day. It teaches you some useful phrases that you can use to get around town in a foreign country, and on the longrun I believe it can help with much more complex things as well, however at the time of writing this I am still relatively in the beginning of the Swedish course. It helps you get a foundation level understanding that you can start using when reading texts in the language you're learning, and from there on exploring other forms of getting used to the language, such as videos or chatting with online friends who are native speakers.

Stay away unless you learn a mainstream language

I can only speak from the perspective of someone trying to learn Finnish. I’ve been using Duolingo for nearly 2 years, daily, even had the premium for a bit. But I finished the lessons after 3 months and the last year and a half I’ve been doing the same lessons over and over again, waiting (hoping) to see new content added which obviously hasn’t happened yet. At this point it’s only a habit and a waste of time, reason for which my days using Duolingo are numbered.
On top of everything, even the few lessons available have major flaws for someone trying to understand Finnish grammar (and I would bet it’s the same for most languages), not explaining WHY one form is correct over another. And so many times you could be giving a correct answer (translating correctly) and it’s marked as a mistake because it accepts only one answer.
And lastly, free users are being spammed with two ads after almost every lesson for the past month or so. Why would a sane person trying to learn Finnish spend money on Duolingo when you don’t even have the days of the week, or the seasons in the teaching vocabulary.
Find some other app or a tutor if you really want to learn a new language.
