The cylinder does update to give you an "estimate" of what the charge of your iPhone is. Due to a restriction in Apple's Watch Connectivity we can only sync this "estimate" once every 30 minutes. As a result we can only show the charge of the iPhone +/- 3% of what the actual value, hence the charge image vs a specific percentage. If you want the actual percentage, all you have to do is tap the icon and the percentage is retrieved from the iPhone.
