Smartify is a smart way to learn about magnificent art from the comfort of your home.
With the help of the camera on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, the app recognises more than two million works from 100-plus art institutions around the world. Just scan a work of art to listen to audio commentary or read a description detailing the piece’s history and inspiration.
You needn’t be standing in front of the artwork. This feature also works with photos of famous pieces. Try scanning a thumbnail of van Gogh’s The Starry Night in your web browser, for instance.
The app also gives you access to curated tours of top museums and galleries (many of which are free) that you can listen to from home. Masterpieces of the Louvre, for example, offers insights about the Venus de Milo, da Vinci's Mona Lisa and a dozen other great works.
While you follow along, you can bring up information on the works within the app, to go into more detail.
Explore by venue and you can view the collections of galleries near where you live – or museums far from your home. Swipe to browse works of art from the National Gallery in London, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, Moscow’s Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and many others.
And when you find a piece of art you love, the app can even show you how it would look in your home. Tap the AR (augmented reality) button at the top of the screen to see the priceless painting hanging (virtually) on your wall.
