Very iOS centric. Maybe too much.

I loved iWork ’09 and previous versions. With the new release of iWork (2013), I have been struggling somewhat to adapt to the new layout, especially the format bar (which has replaced the previously excellent inspector). Clearly, this version of Numbers is focused primarily on providing continuity and compatibility with its iOS counterpart. You get the immediate sense of being on an iPad when using it, and because of the inherent attributes of a touch interface, Numbers now seems to present some advantages but also some significant barriers to previous workflow. For example, I really enjoy the zooming and panning of sheets by pinching and three finger scrolling on the trackpad, but at the same time, I cannot get over having to go to the format bar to make the most minor adjustments. So there are compromises, but the true value of this version is in its compatibility with iOS.

I also own an iPad, and Numbers is actually now far easier to use on this device that it previously was. Moreover, all changes made between either device (Mac or iPad) is always correctly mirrored on the file. This means Numbers is now truly with you wherever you go, and that’s a really good thing. If you don’t own an iPad and have no intention of sharing your files to iPads, then stick to Numbers ’09. It is much more mouse friendly and, quite frankly, it looks much better.
