Impossible to get consistent readings

I am unable to get consistent readings with the app. The readings vary wildly between 30 and 160 hz. Could be my own ineptness but I understood this app to be foolproof and that it is not. Have a 50 dollar Krikit took on order which will hopefully do the job.
