CotEditor is a light-weight, neat, yet powerful text editor designed for editing plain-text files such as web pages (HTML, CSS), program source codes (Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.), structured texts (Markdown, Textile, TeX, etc.), or any other kind of plain-text.

The application is exactly made for macOS. CotEditor looks and behaves just as macOS applications should. It means, you already know how to use it even on the first launch. There are no complicated setting files that require geek knowledge so that you can access all your settings including syntax definitions and themes from a standard settings window.

CotEditor launches so quickly that you can write your text immediately when you want to. It's perfect for you to write a draft version of your document or a scratch code. The simply organized user interface doesn't disturb your task. However, at the same time, CotEditor is neither software only for beginners nor a typical minimal “zen-style” editor. It is fully customizable. There are, of course, syntax highlighting for various languages, find and replace with the regular expression, auto-indentation, command-line tool, and lots of other deep functions. Very satisfied!

I found this app by accident when searching for something to program HTML, CSS and Javascript in. I wanted something that is visually similar to notepad++. The fact that the app is on the mac app store is even better because it adds to the safe feeling. It’s amazing how it’s compleately free, and still works so well. The possibility to change between coding languages fast is also fantastic! Just great!

A beautifully made text editor for macOS

CotEditor is free, yet so polished. It starts within a second or two (while Visual Code and BBEdit both take four or five secounds).

I could go on, describe CotEditor in detail, but I'd rather tell you why you should download and use it:

I've been coding since 2008—I bought my first iMac a couple years earlier. I've used TextMate since the very beginning. Later, I was forced to switch to TextMate 2.

Today, I use BBEdit and Sublime Text. None of these apps are free. That shouldn't bother you if you intend to spend many hours a day in that particular text editor, however.

When I need to read an XML file or a long README document, it would be overkill to fire up apps like Xcode, or even Atom/MS Visual Studio Code.

This is where CotEditor shines. It talks all languages, it's competent enough to alter whatever document I might need to change, and it's quick and small and lean… :)

I have not yet donated, but I'd like to think that we all should demonstrate appreciation of high quality software for the Mac.

Great and simple code editor

I do miss a fold- and collapse functionality though. Hope the developer will add that feature soon.
