Description

Researchers at Monash University have developed the low FODMAP diet and a corresponding app to assist in the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Monash University FODMAP diet works by swapping foods high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), with low FODMAP alternatives. Around 75% of people with IBS experience symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.

The app comes directly from the research team at Monash and includes the following:

- General information about the FODMAP diet and IBS.
- Easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the app and the 3-Step FODMAP diet.
- A Food Guide detailing the FODMAP content for hundreds of foods using a simple 'traffic light system'.
- A list of branded products that have been certified by Monash as low FODMAP.
- A collection of over 70 nutritious, low FODMAP recipes.
- Functions that allow you to create your own shopping list and add notes to individual foods
- A Diary that enables you to record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels. The Diary will also guide you through step 2 of the diet - FODMAP reintroduction.
- The ability to adjust units of measurement (metric or imperial) and activate colour blindness assistance.

Seems very helpful so far

The app has a lot of good info, tips, and guide. I think it's a worthwhile purchase.

All in all helpful but needs a little improvement

In the app’s reintroduction option in the apps diary section it divides the different things you can reintroduce into different categories:
• Lactose, Sorbitol, Mannitol, Fructose, GOS, Fructan - grain foods, Fructan - vegetable and fruits, Fructan - garlic, Fructan - onion, Fructose + Sorbitol and finally Fructan + GOS

These different categories are the tested by the usher during the reintroduction phase and the user determines which of the different cats they can and cannot eat. They then have the option of creating a filter based off of the results of the reintroductions in the Food Guide part of the app. The filter however doesn’t use all of the categories above it simply uses:
• Lactose, Sorbitol, Mannitol, Fructose, GOS & Fructan
This creates a problem for users like me who have reacted to the Fructan - grain foods category but have been okay with the Fructan - vegetable and fruits and the Fructan - onion categories. How am I supposed to filter that when the only option is Fructan and the specific types are left out? I’m a green face two of the Fructan categories as I didn’t react to them but I’m a red face on the other.

Hi there, thanks for your review.

Fructans are a tricky FODMAP as they are commonly found in so many foods. We break the fructan category down within the reintroduction option as some people do often find that can deal with fructans in some food types and not others, which sounds like what has occurred in your case.
For the filter, it becomes a bit long and confusing if we were to add a fructan filter for each of the different food types seen in reintroduction. We would suggest doing one of the two following options:
1. If you find that you can tolerate most fructan-containing food types, then don't use the filter but just note down which ones you cannot tolerate and continue to exclude those.
2. If you find that you cannot tolerate most fructan-containing food types, we suggest the opposite of the above. So turn on the filter and instead just note down which fructan-containing foods that you can tolerate.

We do appreciate the potential inconvenience of this, it can be difficult to provide enough individualised functions within the app whilst still being so general.
