Description
Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.
It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and keeps videos playing in the background.
Note: The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. Vinegar needs access to the web page to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!
(By the way, check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's basically a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites other than YouTube.)

Amazing but can be godlike
This is soooo good already I feel bad for mentioning it, but this could be even better if it supported sponsorblock and chapters, both added as chapters to the player. But I love this extension already!
Love it but can be improved
Great extension for Safari, although i miss some of the functions from the original youtube player, would love to be able to double press the screen for full screen, and be able to hide the quality settings etc at the top of the screen

Thanks! Vinegar used to have the double-click-to-full-screen feature, but it clashed with the interactions of the controls so I removed it. (For example, if you click a bit too quickly to fast-forward the video twice, the video player will interpret it as a full screen call.)
You can hide the toolbar in Vinegar's settings. You can access the settings by clicking the Vinegar icon in Safari's toolbar.
Better than excellent
Long story short: I used browser YouTube on my iPad to get Picture in Picture
The YouTube browser player is extremely buggy for iPad.
I found this extension and it fixed my bugs AND removed all the ads.
Would rather pay YouTube premium price to you than to YouTube…
