Description

DianHua Dictionary is a Chinese English dictionary and Study Tool for iOS.

DianHua Dictionary is a Chinese English dictionary for iOS. Using data from the CC-CEDICT project, DianHua Dictionary provides search support for English, Mandarin Pinyin (with or without tones), Traditional Characters, Simplified Characters, and mixed searches consisting of any combination of the above.

Other features of DianHua Dictionary include:

- Search History: All search terms entered into the Search field are stored in your Search History. Touch any term in the list to see the results.

- Bookmarks: Arrange all of the words you are studying into a nested hierarchy of Folders.

- Writing Practice: Under the Study tab, you can practice typing or writing characters using any of the iPhone's Simplified or Traditional keyboards, including the character drawing keyboards. Choose whether you want to see Pinyin and/or English for the prompt and draw or type the appropriate Chinese character into the box provided.

- Flashcards: Select any combination of Traditional, Simplified, English, and Pinyin for the Front and Back of the cards and grade your confidence in your answer. If you choose to use the Difficulty sorting algorithm, more difficult words will be shown more often than words you tend to answer correctly.

- Numbers: Convert numeric entries to Simplified and/or Traditional variants including their Banking equivalents. Touch the audio icon to hear arbitrary numbers spoken.

- DianHuaDictionary.com: Search from your browser, sync between multiple devices, export, and import data.

Great for learning Mandarin Chinese

This is an excellent application. The Flashcard function makes learning new words and characters less troublesome than it would normally be. The bookmark function is also a great idea and works well when set up correctly - it takes a bit of getting used to and it would be great if later versions allowed deletion of words and transfer of words between bookmarks. Also, it would be good if short sentences could be stored under a bookmark and search results could be sorted by tone.

An excellent app

This is an amazing application and it is free. I would have been quite happy to pay for this. I am fully bilingual in terms of speaking and reading, but as virtually all of my writings for the past 40-50 years have been in English, I tend to forget how to write most Chinese words. This dictionary is a saviour.
A must have for anyone whose primary language is English but occasionally need to write some Chinese.

Rather Sad ,

Bad now, was good.

Ever since recent update, users have been asked to log in all the time before getting to dictionary. And it's now 4 steps before you can use the app: open into a login page, choose offline, warning given then one press ok, goes into dictionary page, another warning!!!!!!!!! Now now now... This is irritating. And it's not as stable as before, keeps crashing.
For users who just want to have a simple dictionary which used to work well for past years, this is now a hassle. There should be option for users to be able to go back to simple offline mode after initial set-up of new update and then leave users' experience of the app same as before. Sad, very sad.
