With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

Great app with room for improvement

Been a user of duolingo for a while now and recently started with the Korean course. Just some suggestions to improve learning.

The “letters” section helps a lot in recapping characters necessary for reading. However, it’s too simplified. For example, the section mentions that ㅆ has the “ss” sound (e.g. 싸 (ssa)). When I do lessons and encounter words like 갔, suddenly the pronunciation becomes “gat” and not “gass” and no explanation is given during the lesson when an answer is incorrect. Turns out, the placement of the letters (initial vs final) will affect the sound of certain letters and I only learnt about it through research of my own which should not have been necessary.

For the Korean course, perhaps the guidebook section could be more comprehensive in explaining the above as well when the concept is being introduced.

Audio gets staticky when certain words are played during lessons. Can’t remember which characters in particular but I hope your team reviews them soon.

In addition, I enjoyed the explanation for grammar in the guidebook under sections 1 & 2 in the Japanese course, but noticed that explanation of grammar from section 3 under the same course is pretty lacking. Would love to see it updated soon as grammar usage becomes more complex!

Nice app but needs some improvement

I really appreciate the app as it helps me learn Spanish, German and other foreign languages I don’t know. It is really fun as the Duolingo owl is very cute, and the leagues make me more interested in learning the language as I can upgrade to a higher league if I am among the top few. Although, there are literally one ad after every single lesson you learn, that makes me a bit uninterested and disappointed. It is very irritating to see ads that are up to 30s long every time you finish a lesson. Well, as I know, many users are experiencing this problem as well. It kinds of forces you to buy the super Duolingo or family plan which is actually not cheap. The individual one is about 7 dollars plus for each month, which is actually 84 dollars plus per year. The family plan is 10 dollars plus each month, which makes 120 dollars plus a year. To be honest, it is not really expensive but I would not like to spend money on learning on apps.
