Scummy practices

I bought the app when it wasn’t on a subscription basis and they changed it to a subscription basis some time later, and you lose the ability to use the app completely if you don’t subscribe. When people buy an app, they expect to be able to use it indefinitely unless it’s stated upfront that’s it’s on a subscription basis. You can choose not to update the app but you shouldn’t remove people’s ability to use it. Absolutely deplorable to change it to a subscription basis unilaterally. Giving advance warning does not absolve you one bit. Other apps allow you to use the functions you paid for, just without new updates, but not this app. Completely unethical.

Thank you for your review. In order to transition to a more sustainable business model we decided to introduce a subscription. You still have the ability to use the app, including all your existing history of words, and access new pronunciation of some words, however, we think it is fair if you use Howjsay regularly, to help contribute to its future development, with a nominal subscription charge.
As an app developer we license the use of the software to users, and may review that license from time to time, as is necessary to continue to maintain the app.

I feel scammed

I thought I bought a regular app and paid the price, and now I’m left with nothing unless I pay you additional fees after the purchase? Thanks a lot.

Hi Gregory, existing customers have been given a generous 18 months warning of the change to subscription pricing, only coming into effect in May 2022. There is an ongoing cost for existing users, which is why we decided to introduce a minimal subscription.
