Description

The Mount Washington Valley Age-Friendly (MWV AF) Trails app shows trails from Ossipee to Harts Location in the New Hampshire White Mountains and adjacent Maine that are walkable by people of all ages and all abilities. Trails chosen for the app have minimal elevation change, minimal root and rock hazards, and are mostly wide enough for two people to walk side by side. ADA trails are clearly distinguished. The app was designed by, and trail tracks and photos were collected by, the Outdoor Spaces working group of the MWV Age-Friendly Community. The Mount Washington Valley Age-Friendly Community became a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities in 2018. The Age-Friendly community spans eleven towns in New Hampshire and one in Maine.

The app is intended to be simple and easy to use. In addition to following their progress along a trail using their devices location, users can collect their own tracks and record their own photos. Two different base maps can be used completely offline and, when the user has a cellular or wireless data connection, the user can also see the trails and photo locations plotted on an Apple satellite or road map. The built-in database shows the names of many lakes, summits, rivers, etc.

What’s New

Version 1.1.0

v. 1.1.0 -- 12 June 2024

• NEW: Get driving directions to the trailhead or any point of interest. When you tap any trail, one of the buttons in the message box is now "Directions to Trailhead". When you tap that button, a second message appears telling you that you are leaving the MWV AF Trails app and will be taken to the Apple Maps app. When you tap "Go to Maps" Apple Maps will open and will show you the navigation choices for driving from your current location to the trailhead. Once you arrive at the parking area for the trailhead, you can switch back to the MWV AF Trails app to start your walk. Directions are also available from the details screens for any trail or point of interest by tapping the "Directions" button. The directions may contain an advisory that the route involves gravel roads and, in a few cases may claim that some walking is necessary to reach the trailhead. Note that this function only works, of course, when you have a cellular or wireless data connection.

• FIXED: a few bugs that were missed in the initial version of the app.
