I love the app!
So my dad always tells me why I don’t read, it’s just that I like reading, but I normally find myself drift into some other silly stuff when I read, I had a princess diary book I wanted to read but felt bored whenever I went to read it, I scanned it and read it alongside the bot speaking it for me. It was the first time I actually enjoyed reading a lot. I love this app!
GREEDY and DISHONEST. App Quality Started Well But Has Got Progressively Worse
I started using Speechify as a premium user from 2021 to help me read during my Masters studies. It was an absolute god send and helped me to get through many many hours of reading. I’ve returned to Speechify in 2024 as I need to read a lot of articles for a research project and I am sorry to say, standards have noticeably declined. The app used to be very good at identifying texts separated by columns but now seems very less so. The app used to have a function that progressively increases reading speed but that does not seem to be available anymore. Finally, the organisation has gotten greedy. When restarting my premium subscription via the app, I was forced to pay $229 for a year’s subscription. There were no other plans available via the app. However, when I checked my subscription on the settings on my phone, there were 35 separate plans with the cheapest being $40. I cancelled the subscription and demanded a refund from Speechify but they evaded saying I had to take it up with Apple. MESSAGE TO APP OWNERS: Wake up and realise that not everybody wants to, or more importantly, not everyone can afford a full years subscription. You have have more success if you had a monthly subscription option available where users can more freely pay as they use.
Need some improvements
To be honest, I like this app as it helps me with my reading. However, there are quite a few improvements I think you should make.
First of all, when I crop an image, I can only move the end of each spot when the image is quite small. It takes me a very long time as it keeps lagging and I can’t seem to be able to use the rectangle button on a small image.
Secondly, the audio sometimes messes up really bad. It pronounced ‘questions’ as ‘kue-sri-s’ which doesn’t even make sense. On another sentence, it pronounced ‘questions’ correctly. By the way, this doesn’t only happen on the word ‘questions’. It happened on ‘would’ ‘that’ ‘triggered’; other simple words that I never thought an AI would mispronounce.
Thirdly, sometimes the AI will skip words that makes the sentence not make sense.
Lastly, whenever I take a screenshot, the words it detected on the side will always be stuck together. I always have to edit the text to make sure there are no weird words but the AI still pronounces it wrongly.
At first, I was recommended this app and thought this app was very useful. It is, but there are many improvements you should make for this app to be more convenient.
